About us

Who we are and what we do

ISVR Consulting is the commercial consultancy unit linked to the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR), a research centre within the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Southampton.

We undertake professional consultancy and applied research in the fields of noise, vibration, acoustics, dynamics and related areas such as audio and hearing.  We handle most projects in-house, but can also call on the specialist expertise of academic and research staff from the ISVR and from other University Departments.

Our clients

Our clients include a wide range of industrial and commercial companies, public bodies, local and national government agencies in the UK and Europe, and sometimes private individuals. Projects vary in complexity and may range from a few hours to months or years of work, and may involve one or more of our consultants.   We are used to working with architects, planners, developers, engineers, scientists, health and safety officers, facilities managers, solicitors, barristers, environmental health officers, project managers, product designers, contractors, .... and many more.

Our staff

Our staff are employees of the University of Southampton.  We currently have 12 consultants, 1 experimental officer, 2 technicians and a secretary/administrator.  All our consultants are graduates, five also have PhDs, one has an EngD, and five also have MSc or MEng degrees.  Seven are corporate members of the Institute of Acoustics  three fellows (FIOA) and four members (MIOA), and two are Members of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers (MIMechE and CEng).   Although we each have our own specialised areas of work we often work together in teams to provide a flexible and timely response to all of our customer’s needs.

Our history

ISVR Consulting was formally founded as the Wolfson Unit for Noise and Vibration Control (WUNVC) in 1968, and we have been providing advice and consultancy services ever since, for more than 50 years.  WUNVC subsequently merged with the Automotive Design Advisory Unit and the Auditory Communications and Hearing Conservation Unit and the name was changed to ISVR Consulting.  Our page on ‘Our history’ gives further information.

ISVR Consulting is a founder member of the Association of Noise Consultants (ANC).

Why choose us?

You may already know what you want, or you may be seeking help and guidance in defining your needs in an unfamiliar field. In either case, we will listen to you and tailor the project to your specific requirements.  Once we have an understanding of the scope of work required, we will normally prepare a proposal for you outlining our understanding of the scope of work involved, describe our approach, or options if there are alternative approaches,  and describe the services we will provide, and the costs involved.  We provide a high quality, independent, flexible, cost effective and thoroughly professional service, and have been doing so for more than 50 years.  Our highly experienced consultants have undertaken more than 9,000 projects in this time. We have our own test facilities, and a wide range of software and equipment.  We can also call on experts or facilities in other consultancy units or academic departments within the University if needed.

Why not give us a call.  You can contact us by phone, email or post and we will be happy to discuss your needs without obligation.  Our contact details are on every page of our site, and we also have a web form if you prefer.  In the unlikely event that we can't help you, we will try to find someone who can.
